Permit. Permit can be found in the western Atlantic from Massachusetts to Brazil, including the Gulf of Mexico and West Indies. It is most popular in south Florida and the Keys, where the largest specimens are taken. Permit travel in schools and can be found in shallow waters including sandy flats and reefs. They tend to become solitary with age. They feed in much the same way as bonefish, rooting in the sand on shallow flats. Permit are a big challenge on light tackle.
