Steelhead Trout Mounts. The Steelhead Trout is a variation of the rainbow trout that differs only in that it migrates between fresh and saltwater to spawn as do salmon. However, unlike salmon, steelhead trout do not die after spawning and make several spawning trips between fresh and salt water during their lifetime. Rainbow trout remain in fresh water for their entire lives. Steelhead usually lack the rainbow colored band that runs down the side of the fish and are usually more silver in color.
